ROYAL TOKAJI LATE HARVEST 2012

The year started with a cold winter, especially during the end of January and the beginning of February. Although lows of -17°C were recorded these temperatures were not sustained for any period of time and the vines were not affected. A serious drought at the beginning of the year was followed by three times the normal rainfall from the end of May to the end of June. This coincided with the blossoming of the vines and fruit set was far from perfect. June and July were very hot with plenty of rain. This required serious attention by the vineyard managers and a very careful spraying program.

Hot weather continued in August but it was coupled with very little rain. September started with very promising conditions for the development of Botrytis. However in the second half of the month and in October the rain was followed by warm nights and dead calm. A large proportion of the grapes we had hoped to develop into a good Aszú harvest were lost on the vine. Prior to this we were able to harvest good quality Aszú berries and these form part of the blend of this Late Harvest wine.
