ISSUE NO.12 MÉZES MÁLY-GREAT FIRST GROWTH DRY SZAMORODNI FURMINT 2016

Mézes Mály is one of just two vineyards classified as a Great First Growth. Its volcanic bedrock is overlaid with deep loess soil, giving elegance, finesse and floral notes to its wines. Royal Tokaji owns 11 of its 19 hectares, facing south with views to the Great Plain in the distance. In 2016 after a successful ripening season we could harvest high quality grapes with very good acidities.

For this wine, we used a blend of healthy and botrytised grapes with a total potential alcohol of 15.5%. The original batch was the base must of the Mézes Mály Aszú 6 puttonyos. After pressing and fermentation, the wine was aged for 5 and a half years in used Zemplén oak barrels in the Dry Szamorodni cellar. Over this time the wine matured under a thin veil of flor, losing around 0.5% alcohol per year.

Dry Szamorodni is the traditional style of dry Tokaji, unique to the region. The nose is full of nutty, almond aromas, and dried fruits. Dry as a bone on the palate, fresh with a balanced and savoury finish.

Serve at 12°C on its own or as an aperitif. Also ideal with aged cheeses, olives, capers, and seafood dishes.
